A New WPT Champion Emerges Down Under

The World Poker Tour has crowned a fresh face as its champion in Australia. On a fateful Wednesday, Richard Lee, hailing from the United States, defied the odds and overcame a field of 600 formidable opponents to clinch his first-ever WPT title. But this victory was not just about the glory; it also earned him a coveted spot on the Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup and a staggering top prize of $854,890 AUD. This significant win also grants him entry to the prestigious WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas in December. The event generated an impressive official prize pool of $4,500,000 AUD, generously rewarding the top 76 finishers.

An Unexpected Champion’s Journey

Richard Lee, residing in Los Angeles, may have found himself in the winner’s circle, but his path to victory was anything but conventional. Predominantly a cash game player, Lee possessed the least tournament experience among the final table contenders. With a mere $6,000 in live cash winnings prior to this event, his triumph in Australia has indelibly boosted his poker resume.

In an interview with WPT’s Lynn Gilmartin after the win, Lee expressed his disbelief, saying, “I don’t think it will ever sink in.” He attributed part of his success to his favorable seat placement, noting, “I think I was really fortunate to have a really good seat, two of the better players were to my right, so I didn’t really face any bullying. For the most part, it was as smooth as it could have gotten.”

A Last-Minute Decision Leads to Glory

Lee’s journey to Australia was initially intended as a two-month stay, but fate had other plans. At the tail end of his stay, he made the impulsive decision to join the tournament. Remarkably, Lee’s flight back home was scheduled for the morning of the final table. As he humorously put it, “I was like, if I [final table] this, I might as well cancel my flight,” and that’s precisely what happened. Lee missed his flight, played his way to victory, and was grateful that his canceled flight did not go to waste.

The Path to Victory Unfolds

Entering the final table, Lee was comfortably positioned in fourth place in chip counts, squarely in the middle of the pack. About twenty hands into the play, he won a significant pot against the start-of-day chip leader, Romain Morvan. This hand saw Lee’s pocket queens triumph over Morvan’s pocket jacks, catapulting Lee to the top of the leaderboard. Despite a triple-up by Ken Demlakian in the same hand, Demlakian would later exit in sixth place after a showdown with Martin Kozlov.

Morvan was the next to bow out, leaving in fifth place after a bold move that Lee swiftly countered with an open-ended straight draw.

Triumph in the Heads-Up Battle

As the tournament progressed, Lee found himself with a substantial chip lead heading into the final stretch. The heads-up duel between Lee and Martin Kozlov was short-lived, spanning just five hands. Lee’s ace-ten outshone Kozlov’s queen-jack, and a favorable runout sealed the deal. Lee secured not only the pot but also the coveted title with his ace-high hand.

Richard Lee’s victory in the WPT Australia is a testament to the unpredictable nature of poker, where an underdog can emerge victorious, forever etching their name in the annals of the game’s history.
