Long-Awaited Victory
After a decade-long pursuit of European Poker Tour (EPT) glory, Oleg Vasylchenko finally clinched his first title at the 2023 PokerStars EPT Prague, overcoming a formidable 56-player field. The Ukrainian poker pro expressed his elation, stating, “It feels great. I was craving for [an EPT title] for ten years.”
Four Mysteries and a Trophy
Vasylchenko’s triumph wasn’t just about the title; he also claimed four mystery bounties during his journey to victory, adding an impressive €80,000 to his €74,673 first-place prize. Reflecting on his previous near misses, Vasylchenko said, “I made several final tables, so I’m really glad I won it.”
Elias Gutierrez Emerges as Bounty King
While Vasylchenko seized the spotlight, Elias Gutierrez emerged as the bounty master of the tournament. Gutierrez not only secured a third-place finish but also claimed an astonishing five out of the nine mystery bounties, amassing a total of €238,150.
Turbocharged Final Table Action
The final table action kicked off with a turbocharged pace, with short-stacked players making swift exits. Vasylchenko wasted no time, eliminating opponents and accumulating bounties early on, setting the stage for a dynamic showdown.
Gutierrez’s Bounty Bonanza
Elias Gutierrez dominated the mystery bounty prize pool, drawing lucky envelopes with prizes of €100,000 and €50,000. His bounty earnings soared to an astounding €175,000, overshadowing even the first-place prize.
Rollercoaster Ride for Marcelo Bonanata
Marcelo Bonanata’s journey included doubling up multiple times and briefly holding the chip lead. However, a series of setbacks culminated in his fourth-place exit, with Gutierrez claiming the highest available €25,000 bounty.
Vasylchenko’s Triumphant Finish
Despite Gutierrez’s early dominance, Vasylchenko’s steady play led to a pivotal moment where he claimed Gutierrez’s chips with a superior hand. The heads-up battle against Enrico Camosci proved to be a swift one, as Vasylchenko sealed the deal on the fifth hand, securing his major live tournament victory with pocket fives.
In a post-tournament interview, Vasylchenko acknowledged the frustration of missing out on some bounties but emphasized his satisfaction with the ultimate prize, stating, “I was in good shape to make some bounties, but you actually need to make some hands. I didn’t get the opportunities that [Gutierrez] got, so I’m kind of frustrated about that. But it was fine. At least I got a trophy!”
