Barry Greenstein, a name synonymous with poker prowess, is a brilliant professional known for his calculated decision-making and analytical approach to the game. His exceptional qualities make him a formidable opponent at the poker table.
Child Prodigy to Poker Phenom
Barry’s tryst with poker began in childhood, and since then, he has remained inseparable from the game. Endowed with a mathematical mind, he excelled not only in poker but also in his academic pursuits at the University of Illinois, where he majored in mathematics and programming. Juggling studies and gameplay came naturally to him.
In the 90s, Greenstein made his foray into major poker events, but it was the 2000s that truly marked his success. Bagging three WSOP bracelets in 2004, 2005, and 2008, he also clinched victories at prestigious tournaments, including Larry Flynt’s Poker Challenge Cup in 2003 and the Main Event Jack Binion World Poker Open in 2004, where he secured a whopping $1,278,370.
Consistent Excellence and Charitable Contributions
Under the alias “barryg1,” Greenstein consistently performed well, particularly at the World Series of Poker (WSOP). In 2017 and 2018, he cashed in 13 bracelet tournaments and achieved as many In The Money (ITM) finishes, showcasing his unwavering skill.
A significant portion of Greenstein’s poker winnings finds its way to various charitable organizations, earning him the moniker “The Robin Hood of Poker.”
Fascinating Insights into Barry’s Life
Aside from his poker achievements, Barry Greenstein showcased his talents early in life. By the age of 12, he earned money through poker, and at 15, he developed his own computer program. Despite obtaining a master’s degree in computer science and starting a Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Illinois, his passion for poker led him away from academia.
Post-university, Greenstein worked at the renowned company “Symantec,” specializing in software development. His personal life included a marriage to Donna, with whom he had two children. Facing family challenges, Barry temporarily left poker to work officially and gain custody of Donna’s three pre-existing children. Despite the efforts, the marriage eventually dissolved.
In the early ’90s, Barry decided to leave his main job and fully commit to poker due to higher earnings and family health issues. His wife and daughter were diagnosed with serious illnesses, necessitating significant financial support.
A notable author and contributor to poker literature, Greenstein wrote a chapter for “Super System 2” and authored his own book, “Ace on the River.” Players who eliminate him from a game receive a signed copy of his book.
Barry Greenstein not only played poker but also contributed to the poker community by teaching Mimi Tran poker lessons, while she, in turn, taught him the Vietnamese language. He was a proud member of the Pokerstars Team Pro.
In 2011, Greenstein’s contributions to poker were officially recognized as he was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.
