The Chess Grandmaster Takes on Poker in a Thrilling Showdown
We’re now three episodes deep into PokerStars’ captivating new show, Mystery Cash Challenge, and one name has been consistently making waves – Alexandra Botez. The professional chess player and celebrated streamer has been running the show, winning the first two rounds of this uniquely formatted challenge. But as Episode 3 unfolds, she faces a new set of challenges and surprises.
The Mystery Cash Challenge Format
Each Mystery Cash Challenge episode is comprised of ten hands. The first nine are €25/€50 cash game hands, played with pot limit preflop and no limit postflop rules. Here’s the twist: for every hand a player wins, they earn a token. To play the final tenth hand of the round, a player must have at least one token. The player with the most tokens starts the final hand with the button advantage.
The final hand is a €100 ante bomb pot, where the winner not only secures a mystery bounty but also faces a unique mystery challenge. In previous episodes, Botez drew a €500 bounty and a €5,300 EPT ticket. However, it’s the challenges that add an extra layer of excitement for viewers.
Challenges and Standings
In Episode 3, Botez’s first challenge targeted Parker Talbot, requiring him to remain silent during the second episode or pay a €100 penalty to every player at the table. The second challenge was for Botez herself: win four of the nine qualifying hands to earn an additional bounty envelope.
Here’s the standings at the start of Round 3:
- Alexandra Botez: €25,175 (+€15,175) – Bounties: +€500 cash, +€5,300 EPT ticket
- Parker Talbot: €13,150 (+€3,150)
- Sam Grafton: €9,700 (-€300)

Early Rounds
The episode began with Talbot successfully securing his token in Hand #1, asserting his dominance at the table. In Hand #2, Botez showcased her strategy with a clever move, winning her first hand with a bluff using 7♠2♠. Her fellow players were left in awe of her skill.
Middle Game
As the middle game unfolded, Botez took a breather after losing a hand to Grafton. However, she rebounded and seized an opportunity, winning a hand with pocket kings against Grafton’s ace-eight.
Bomb Pot Drama
The bomb pot, an exciting highlight of every episode, saw Botez on the button. The flop turned the tables, giving her a straight draw. With some strategic betting and calls, she clinched her third mystery prize, solidifying her dominance at the table.
